The beginning of the pop art movement can be traced back to Great Britain in the 1950’s and then spread to the United States as well. This distinctive genre tried to bridge the gap between high and low art. The proponents of this movement sought to bring art from its high academic pedestal into everyday lives, through common, commercial objects. Looking to integrate art into everyday life, the artists used art in the space of advertising, television, comic strips, which are all a part of mass culture (Sayre, 2013).
